Independence Coffee Co. offers freshly roasted coffees that are signature blends, all made in Texas. You can find their single-serve coffee and whole bean coffee in their online store. They also provide cold brew concentrate and kits for making your own cold brew at home.
The founders of Independence Coffee Co., Ragan and Christi Bond, got into the coffee roasting business unexpectedly. Ragan had worked as a commodities trader in the energy sector for fifteen years before the Bonds moved to Brenham, Texas. In 2001, Christi and her sister opened a small coffee shop called Main Street Coffee & Trading, which later became Independence Coffee Co. Ragan began roasting coffee for the shop in his garage, starting with 1,800 lbs. of coffee on a 10 lb. Ambex roaster.
In 2018, the Bonds opened Black Truck '48 Coffee & Tea Market, a specialty coffee and tea retail destination in Brenham. The name pays tribute to the 1948 Ford black truck they originally used for coffee delivery. In 2019, Christi and Ragan Bond were honored as the SBA Persons of the Year for Texas. Alongside their team of 32 employees, they roasted a record-breaking 700,000 lbs. of coffee that year. They continue to make positive changes in 2020 by introducing new coffee pods to replace their single-serve cups.
Independence Coffee Co. prides itself on its small roastery. They believe their size and hands-on approach allow them to meet the high standards of both novice and experienced coffee enthusiasts. They package their coffees immediately after roasting, often while they are still warm, ensuring freshness. Their commitment to freshness and distribution standards enables them to deliver their coffees to various establishments on the same day they are roasted.
Independence Coffee Co.'s mission is to create a passionate community of coffee and tea lovers. They achieve this by providing high-quality hand-roasted and packaged coffees and artisanal tea products to their customers, all while honoring traditional roasting and blending methods. They aim to pay tribute to coffee's rich history while enjoying the process.
The roasting team at Independence Coffee Co. consists of three individuals, one of whom is their original roaster. The other two have been trained by the original roaster, ensuring consistency in the roasting and blending process. This allows them to create consistent batches of coffee with the same roast characteristics every time.
To maintain freshness, their 50-count case size coffee bags are individually wrapped and flushed with nitrogen, giving them a one-year expiration date. Each package is clearly labeled with the name of the coffee blend, allowing customers to easily identify their desired flavor. These coffee bags are an excellent choice for offices or as a gift at gatherings with friends and family.
Independence Coffee Co. is committed to giving back to their community. They support local organizations such as the Baylor Park Project, which funds preservation and maintenance projects for the original home of Baylor University. They also contribute to the Brenham High School Special Needs Program, where special needs students operate a coffee cart, gaining valuable skills for future employment. Additionally, they support the Boys & Girls Club of Washington County. They offer a Texas version of the traditional Mexican coffee called Café de la Olla, which has flavors of brown sugar and cinnamon. It is a light roast, made with premium Mexican and Brazilian coffee beans. Independence Coffee Co. is certified as a Women-Owned Business and proudly represents the spirit of Texas.
